Headline: Launch of the Global CO2 Initiative's TEA & LCA Guidelines for CO2 Utilization (Version 1.1)

With increasing support across the globe, innovations in carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technologies are now widely acknowledged to contribute to achieving climate mitigation targets while creating economic opportunities. In order to assess the potential benefits and reduce environmental and commercial risks of these innovations life-cycle assessments (LCA) and techno-economic assessments (TEA) are needed that inform decision makers in industry, science and policy. Hence, the Guidelines for LCA and TEA have been developed by a consortium of partners from TU Berlin, RWTH Aachen, The University of Sheffield and IASS Potsdam supported by The Global CO2 Initiative and EIT Climate-KIC. The Guidelines aim at enabling a comprehensive and transparent comparison between different technologies, reducing ambiguity in assessment results and avoiding pitfalls, thus accelerating funding decisions and promoting further technology development. 

Since their first introduction in 2018 the consortium has involved an open community of practitioners, commissioners and users of such assessments to gather feedback on the initial Guidelines. Improvements in response to the feedback have now been incorporated in the Version 1.1. Updates have been made by including recent publications in this evolving field of research, correcting minor inconsistencies and mistakes, and displaying a better alignment of TEA with LCA. Specifically, some sections have been restructured to be more reader-friendly and a few guidelines revised to be more instructive. Moreover, guidance was added on some aspects that were not sufficiently covered in the last version.
