This roundtable discussion will bring together experts from Brazil and Europe to discuss the potential role and challenges of both hydrogen-based and bio-based pathways to climate neutrality. Do they complement or contradict each other? What can Brazil and Europe learn from each other? And what avenues are there for cooperation to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels in hard-to-abate sectors?

COVID 19: Deepening the low carbon divide?

In a recent IASS study, a team of researchers investigated the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the energy transition in different types of countries, including low-carbon leaders and fossil-fuel exporters among the G20 countries, as well as low-income countries.

Closed workshop:

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the off-grid renewable energy sector: challenges and opportunities. What is the role for policy?

In this session, we will use an innovative, co-creative, participatory approach to map the main challenges and opportunities faced in the off-grid renewable energy sector, especially on securing energy finance. We will also discuss how these issues are linked and identify appropriate policy responses. This workshop will be co-facilitated by Dr. Maria Apergi, the Scientific Project leader of the ISIGET project, Dr. Natalia Realpe Carrillo, Klaus Töpfer Sustainability Fellow at IASS and CEO of HEDERA, and Gunnar Raasch M.P.P., Willy Brandt School of Public Policy.

Die Landesregierung Brandenburg hat einen Nachhaltigkeitsbeirat eingerichtet, dessen wissenschaftliche Leitung IASS-Direktor Ortwin Renn innehat. In der 3. Sitzung geht es um ein Positionspapier zum Thema Energiewende in Brandenburg, mit dem Fokus auf CO2-freien Industrieprozessen. Zudem werden wichtige Eckpunkte der Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie des Landes Brandenburg diskutiert.

Supporting blue recovery through regional cooperation

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted millions of people, causing significant loss of human life and unprecedented economic and social disruption. The ocean community, and especially those who depend upon marine resources for their livelihoods, have been affected and the various consequences of the crisis are still being felt by many of them. Around the world, States and intergovernmental organisations have launched emergency and recovery plans. Many stakeholders have called for these plans to include provisions for the ocean, to take advantage of its enormous contribution to sustainable development pathways.

(IASS Potsdam) is pleased to invite you to a screening and discussion of the documentary film: jatun yacu – amazon of rights. This documentary film traces the ebb and flow of rights in and of the Amazon across space and time, ethnographically exploring the question of what it means for a river to have rights, where these rights come from and what they might look like visually.
