Maria Apergi joined RIFS in December 2019 as a scientific project leader for the ISIGET project, which focuses on the impacts of the clean energy transition on countries of the global south. She holds a PhD in Environmental Policy and Development from London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her research focused on applications of off-grid solar energy in Guinea-Bissau, where she studied households' energy adoption choices and energy use patterns. She has also received a MSc in Environmental Policy and Regulation from LSE, a MSc in International Affairs from Columbia University and a BSc in Economics from the University of Athens.

In addition, she has worked as an energy analyst for the private sector and as an independent consultant in a number of projects. This includes her work with the Overseas Development Institute, where she has worked on projects related to climate finance, energy access, green growth and disaster risk management.
