Headline: COVID 19: Deepening the low carbon divide?

Date: October 8, 2021; Venue: Online (Zoom)
Time: 14:00 – 15:00

This public round table is organized jointly by the Investigating the Systemic Impacts of the Global Energy Transition (ISIGET) Research Group at IASS Potsdam, HEDERA Sustainable Solutions and the Impact-Driven & Action-Based Research Project (IMPACT-R).

In a recent IASS study, a team of researchers investigated the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the energy transition in different types of countries, including low-carbon leaders and fossil-fuel exporters among the G20 countries, as well as low-income countries. The findings are summarized in the article titled “The COVID-19 crisis deepens the gulf between leaders and laggards in the global energy transition.” Taking a deep-dive into national policy responses, a key take-away is that industrialized countries were able to buy their way into a post-crisis environment, whereas non-OECD nations were not. This has helped safeguard or even accelerate investments in climate-friendly technologies among leaders, while laggards are faced with the threat of increased carbon lock-in. After a brief presentation of the study’s main findings, lead author Rainer Quitzow will discuss the identified challenges and possible ways forward with representatives from civil society, development and finance.
