Headline: Prof. Carlo Rubbia receives Honorary Degree from China University of Mining and Technology

During his recent visit to China Prof. Rubbia received the Honorary Degree from the University of Mining and Technology for his outstanding contributions to science and technology worldwide. Founded in 1909, CUMT is the oldest higher learning institution in the Country with a focus on mining engineering and it continues to receive much attention and support from leaders of the Central Government (http://eng.cumt.edu.cn/). Following the Ceremony Prof. Rubbia gave a Nobel Laureate Distinguished Lecture on "Innovation in the Future of Energy" in which he also highlighted some of the main programmes conducted at the IASS. CUMT currently has 15 schools and departments with 46 undergraduate specialties, 48 graduate programs and 8 research stations for post-doctoral graduates. The total student body is 30,624 among whom 19,416 are undergraduate students, 2,208 graduate and doctorate students. The main campus in Xuzhou hosts more than 3,000 staff with over 1,400 full-time academics, 230 professors and 333 associate professors. More than 60,000 students have graduated from the school. Among 3,845 faculty and staff members, 1245 are full-time teachers. There are 5 academicians of China Academy of Engineering, 95 doctorate graduate supervisors, over 700 full professors and associate professors. Since its inception, CUMT has produced more than 100,000 graduates, among which 10 are top-level academicians in the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Engineering, and 20 are ministers and provincial governors.
With the development of the university, CUMT has continually opened up new areas for international academic exchanges and cooperation, establishing co-operational and exchange agreements and relations with dozens of universities and research organizations from the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia and other countries.
Since 1990, the university has been awarded 18 prizes in terms of the three national prizes, namely the National Natural Science, the National Invention, and the National Science & Technology Prizes, thus ranking at the advanced level of the universities in China. Now the school has undertaken more than 500 scientific programs and projects at national, provincial and ministerial levels, demonstrating its strong academic and research power.
