Headline: IASS participation in the 7th meeting on “Sharing Knowledge"

On 18th May 2012, Prof. Carlo Rubbia participated in a special session dedicated to “Transporting electrical energy by superconductivity” organized within the 7th meeting of the “Sharing Knowledge across the Mediterranean” Foundation that took place in La Marsa, Tunisia.

These multidisciplinary meetings are meant to encourage the dialogue and collaboration between scientists from the Northern, Eastern and Southern shores of the Mediterranean, and thus contribute to the reduction of imbalance among the various nations involved.
Some of the most important subjects covered are: access to the basics (water, energy, food), access to the digital world, and access to recent developments in fundamental science. Within this context the energy problem is of special importance, with efficient energy transport being one of the key issues addressed. After a general presentation of the challenges facing the future energy transport and an introduction to the IASS programme on superconducting power lines, Prof. Rubbia joined a round-table discussion with industry representatives ranging from conductor manufacturers, cable producers, electricity transport and aerospace companies.
All the competencies necessary for the success of such an innovative and ambitious energy transport project have been thus reunited around the same table and have agreed on the vital role that an intense R&D program will play in the next years, catalyzed by a close collaboration between academia and industry.
