Freiheit, ja – aber welche? Zum Verhältnis zwischen Freiheit, Gerechtigkeit und einem guten Leben
As one of the key achievements of modernity, freedom today is cherished as a central building block for quality of life. This raises the question of what kind of freedom is needed to achieve the good life for all in a just manner. Currently, individual freedom of consumption in particular is deemed constitutive for our societies. However, this comes into conflict with the possibility of achieving a good life for all, now and in the future, and thus also with fundamental tenets of justice. For this reason, an understanding of freedom and quality of life that is primarily based on limitless consumption must be countered by a needs-based perspective on a good life for all, as well as alternative conceptions of freedom which refer in particular to qualitative aspects. Examples for the joint pursuit of freedom, quality of life and justice are provided by the capabilities and consumption corridors approaches.
