Headline: Ways forward in the global governance of the oceans? Proposals from Germany

Rio+20, the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, has made clear that the international community is at a turning point in the protection of the oceans. More than 40% of the oceans are already considered highly influenced by human activities. Scientific evidence abounds that fish stocks are fished well beyond sustainable levels. A positive shift in our interactions with the oceans must therefore be a cornerstone of sustainable development.

At the invitation of IASS Executive Director Professor Klaus Töpfer and Professor Martin Visbeck, speaker of the Excellence Cluster "Future Ocean" (GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research and the University of Kiel), leading ocean scientists and representatives from government and civil society came together in Berlin to discuss potential strategies for sustainable ocean governance. The Flagship Report of the German Advisory Council on Global Change "World in Transition - Governing the Marine Heritage", the work of the Kiel Ocean Sustainability Research Group on the formulation of a dedicated Sustainable Development goal (SDG) for the ocean and coasts, and the outcomes of the IASS research project "Advancing Governance of the High Seas" were presented as potential contributions to the development of transformation pathways in ocean governance.
