Headline: Scientific advisory boards to the federal government open dialogue on sustainable development

“Fostering dialogue between government departments and enhancing cooperation across the scientific policy advice community are essential to ensuring the successful implementation of the German Sustainable Development Strategy – this meeting marks an important step towards these goals,” said Patrizia Nanz, co-chair of the Science Platform Sustainability 2030. At the invitation of the platform and the German Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Germany), representatives from ten scientific advisory boards to the federal government and ten federal ministries with diverse areas of focus convened on Wednesday, 23 May, to discuss obstacles to political action and linkages to the German Sustainable Development Strategy.

“The questions and problems that must be tackled in order to advance sustainable development are closely intertwined and involve numerous interlinkages and variabilities – this creates opportunities for much-needed inter-ministerial and cross-policy coordination,” emphasised Dirk Messner, who also co-chairs the Science Platform Sustainability 2030. “The outcome of this meeting is very pleasing: the organisations in attendance underscored the value and importance of improved dialogue and identified the German Strategy for Sustainable Development and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as suitable frameworks to achieve this.”

The Science Platform Sustainability 2030 was established in 2017 and is tasked with guiding research in support of the German Strategy for Sustainable Development. The platform fosters research on issues relevant to sustainable development and works to strengthen dialogue between science, policymakers, business, and civil society.
