Headline: IASS Director Mark Lawrence appointed Honorary Professor

The University of Potsdam appointed PD Dr. Mark Lawrence as an Honorary Professor as part of the festivities surrounding the Day of the Mathematics and Natural Science Faculty on November 6, 2013.

Mark Lawrence has been Scientific Director of the IASS’ research cluster “Sustainable Interactions with the Atmosphere“ since October 2011. He has also been teaching a course on “Atmospheric Science in the Context of Global Change” at the University of Potsdam since the winter semester 2013/2014.

Prof. Lawrence received his PhD in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta (USA), in 1996. From 2000 to 2005, he led a junior research group at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC) in Mainz, and from 2006 onwards he led the atmospheric modeling research group at the MPIC. He received his habilitation in 2006 from the University of Mainz, where he was also an interim professor for meteorology during 2009-2010. In 2010, he received the annual teaching award for the German Federal State of Rhineland-Palatine, as well as the teaching award from the University of Mainz.

Prof. Lawrence is author or co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. He was co-coordinator of the EU funded project „MEGAPOLI“ (2008-2011)and is currently coordinator of the EU project „EuTRACE“ (European Transdisciplinary Assessment of Climate Engineering). He has also been editor of the journals “Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics” and “Atmospheric Environment”, and is active in a variety of international committees, such as UNEP’s Atmospheric Brown Clouds project (UNEP-ABC) , the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry project (IGAC), and the Commission on Atmospheric Chemistry and Global Pollution (CACGP). In 2013, he was appointed contributing author of the Working Group III report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

He has also been editor of the journals “Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics” and “Atmospheric Environment”, and is active in a variety of international committees, such as UNEP’s Atmospheric Brown Clouds project (UNEP-ABC) , the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry project (IGAC), and the Commission on Atmospheric Chemistry and Global Pollution (CACGP). In 2013, he was appointed contributing author of the Working Group III report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
