Headline: Geopolitics of Global Fertilizer Supply Chains: Implications of the War in Ukraine

The Research Institute for Sustainability Potsdam (RIFS) is organizing an insightful webinar focusing on the geopolitical repercussions of the war in Ukraine on global fertilizer supply chains.

Date: October 4th, 2023
Time: 15:30 - 17:00 CEST (9:30 - 11:00 EDT)

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has had profound impacts on global supply chains and food security, particularly influencing the production and trade of synthetic fertilizers closely interwoven with the energy and agricultural sectors. As part of the "Geopolitics of Energy Transformation" project funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, this roundtable aims to shed light on the geopolitical dynamics and vulnerabilities inherent to fertilizer supply chains, including the ramifications of decarbonization initiatives.

The webinar presents an opportunity for participants to discuss potential strategies to alleviate food security threats and vulnerabilities in supply chains amidst this evolving geopolitical backdrop. Expert insights will be shared by:

  • Laura Cross, Director, Market Intelligence Unit, International Fertilizer Association: Presentation (Power Point)
  • Charlotte Hebebrand, Director, Communications and Public Affairs, International Food Policy Research Institute: Presentation (Power Point)
  • Prof. Dr. Margarita Balmaceda, Professor, Diplomacy and International Relations, Seton Hall University & Affiliated Scholar, RIFS Potsdam: Presentation (Power Point)

The session will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Rainer Quitzow, Research Group Leader at RIFS Potsdam and Professor of Sustainability and Innovation at Technische Universität Berlin.

This webinar is part of the project "Geopolitics of the Energy Transformation: Implications of an International Hydrogen Economy", funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, and the first edition of the series “Geopolitics of Fertilizer Supply Chains”.
