Claimed spaces of participation and their role in strengthening community resilience and resistance
Claimed spaces of participation can enable collective action to address complex urban challenges societies are facing. In this article, we elaborate on the extent to which these spaces foster community resilience while also mobilizing resistance. Taking into account different dimensions of community resilience, we analyze how these are strengthened through claimed spaces and how this impact relates to resistance. Instead of regarding community resilience and resistance as two opposing concepts, we argue for a complementary relationship between the two. By analyzing nine different claimed spaces in Barcelona, we show how the concepts can even be considered mutually reenforcing.
