Start of Global Soil Week 2013: Losing Ground?

Building on the success of the event in 2012, the IASS will host the Global Soil Week 2013 "Losing Ground?" from 27-31 October in Berlin. The Global Soil Week provides a platform so that the protection of soils can be anchored into global sustainability targets. National and international partners include the European Commission, the FAO, UNEP, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and the German Federal Environment Agency. Around 400 participations from more than 60 countries are expected to attend this year.

Photo opportunity with Prof. Töpfer and Volkert Engelsman

To mark the start of the 2nd Global Soil Week in Berlin, Prof. Töpfer (IASS) and Volkert Engelsman (“Save our Soils”) will break open the pavement in front of the entrance to the Scandic Hotel as a statement against continued soil sealing. They will plant vegetables in the resulting hole. Environmental activist Vandana Shiva (International Forum on Globalization) will also be present.
