Headline: Transformation of the electricity system - social, economic and institutional prerequisites for a just transition

Kopernikus Project Energy Transition Navigation System | ENavi together with the WWF Poland at the intersessional meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) in Bonn

To ensure that global warming stays within the agreed two-degree limit, the Paris Climate Agreement stipulates that the world must achieve carbon neutrality in the second half of this century. The transition from coal-based power generation to greater reliance on renewable energies would make a considerable contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

But the transformation of our electricity system raises many different questions: How does the energy system need to be reorganised for a successful energy transition? What strategies should governments adopt to ensure that the transition is socially equitable in coal regions? How can local populations be supported in these regions? What international experiences have been gained so far and what can we learn from them?

Researchers from the Kopernikus project Energy Transition Navigation System (ENavi) will provide answers to these questions based on their research during the intersessional meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) in Bonn from 30 April to 10 May 2018. WWF Poland will also present a project in Poland, which it is undertaking in the context of the European Climate Initiative.
