In its July 2020 Hydrogen Strategy, the European Union identified clean hydrogen as a key means to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors on the way to climate neutrality. In parallel, a number of leading economies in Europe have developed their national hydrogen strategies. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the imperative to phase out Russian gas imports, the EU has resolved to drastically increase its clean hydrogen targets both for domestic production and imports. Achieving these very ambitious goals will be impossible without greater intra-European coordination and strong international partnerships along the hydrogen value chain. The 1.5-day workshop and roundtable will seek to promote an open exchange on hydrogen developments in the EU and key member states and how these might be mobilized for a more effective and more aligned European strategy.

The event will be held within the framework of the “Geopolitics of the Energy Transformation: Implications of an International Hydrogen Economy” project funded by the German Foreign Office and is an accompanying event for a comparative study on international dimensions of hydrogen policies in major European countries (to be published in late 2022). Participants in the workshop & roundtable will include experts from think tanks in various EU member states who are authoring related country chapters for the study. The roundtable discussion will aim to create a dialogue between these think tank representatives and invited policymakers and practitioners.
