Headline: Workshop: The G20’s potential for advancing a global transition towards sustainable energy

Germany takes over the G20 presidency from China in 2016. This offers an important window of opportunity for fostering a global transition towards sustainable energy. Over the course of the last years, the G20 has started to actively engage in energy issues. Its members are crucial players for a global energy transition. As a high-level political forum, the G20 can be a powerful agenda setter and exert leadership in global governance. Thus, G20 decisions and actions have the capacity to significantly impact global energy systems. However, the G20 also represent a very heterogeneous group of countries that often take different or even conflicting stances towards energy issues. Thus, finding common ground for a global energy transition is a challenging undertaking.

This invitation-only workshop focuses on topics that are of central importance for the G20 energy agenda under the German presidency 2016/2017. It sheds light on key energy trends and policy priorities in selected G20 countries. Through focused discussions on renewables, energy efficiency and Paris Agreement implementation, it seeks to identify best practices and lessons learned for the G20 energy agenda. The workshop brings together experts on key G20 countries as well as stakeholders from the government, civil society, the private sector and think tanks. The event is part of a broader IASS project on G20 energy policies. IASS will publish a related study with comprehensive G20 country analyses on energy trends and priorities at the end of 2016.
