Headline: Kick-off Conference: REconciling sCience, Innovation and Precaution through Engagement of Stakeholders (RECIPES)

On January 24 and 25, the kick-off conference for the EU Horizon 2020 project RECIPES takes place at Maastricht University.  The RECIPES project will analyse how the precautionary principle is applied in the European Union and improve its future application with recourse to participatory methods. The IASS will lead one of the work packages, which will develop an analytical and methodological multi-case study framework for analyzing 8 case studies related to the precautionary principle, and contribute to building scenarios with stakeholders.

IASS scientific director Ortwin Renn will give the conference’s opening scientific talk, titled “The Precautionary Principle: Coping with uncertainty in a complex world”, setting the tone for the public portion of the conference. IASS research associate Joe Rini will conclude the public aspect of the conference with a presentation on the multi-case study methodology, with a specific focus on the IASS’ novel contribution of bringing in the key risk properties of complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity into analysis of precaution and innovation.
